A flat (by Amalfi Coast standards – still 250 metre ascent/descent!) walk from Praiano overlooking the picturesque natural harbour of Marina di Praia, returning along the same way.

Most of the hikes we have prepared on the Amalfi Coast climb high, using the towering mountains as a vantage point to gain sweeping views along the Gulf of Salerno. This walk is an exception, keeping low and relatively flat - by Amalfi Standards anyway, there is still 250 metres of ascent/descent!

A low altitude walk allows you to ‘zoom in’ and provides the opportunity to explore the minutiae of the creases and folds that make up this dramatic coastline. In this instance, it’s the picturesque cove of Marina di Praia which we skirt from above. Marina di Praia is a natural harbour, with many boats seeking refuge in this sheltered anchorage, one of the region’s most popular beaches, though it only receives sunlight for a few hours during midday, and historically, an important defensive site – you will see the old stone tower which would provide warning about a Saracen attack.

The walk we have prepared reaches the outskirts of Furore, before returning to Praiano the same way you came; I found I noticed many things I had missed the first time and enjoyed the return leg equally.

Having walked around and above Marina di Praia, why not head down to the beach once you have finished the walk; if possible, it is even more idyllic that it appears from above.

There are some exposed and unfenced edges throughout the walk; be careful and keep walking on the path.

Much of the path is rocky. Bear in mind these may be slippery when wet, place your feet with care, and use the handrail, where one is provided.

The path is overgrown and may be tricky to follow in places; read the instructions carefully, check the map regularly and look for red dots of paint on many of the rocks, which will help guide you.

Points of Interest:

San Luca Church

San Luca Church is dedicated to Luke the Evangelist, the Patron Saint of Praiano, and dates to 1588, with a restoration in 1772.

Food and Drink

After leaving Praiano there is nowhere directly along this route to buy food or drink, or to fill up your water bottles, so be sure to carry enough provisions.

At the turnaround point, after 2.6 kilometres, there is a small café if you continue along the road for another 150 metres. At the time of writing, this was only open until 2pm.

Piazza San Luca, Praiano

0.00km – Start in the Piazza San Luca in Praiano. Facing the church and belltower, TURN LEFT to head up the steps. These steps will twist-and-turn their way uphill. At the top of the steps, TURN RIGHT at the T-junction to walk along the flat, paved path. There will be painted ceramics in the wall on your left. Continue along this path, ignoring 4 sets of steps on your left, and 4 on your right.

0.50km – BEAR RIGHT to remain on the flat path, ignoring the set of steps on your left which head uphill towards the road.

0.70km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along the cobbled path as the paved path finished. Ignore the uphill gravel path on your left.

0.82km – BEAR RIGHT to head downhill as the path forks either side of a boulder. There is a sign for Marina di Praia. After 20 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, ignoring a sharp right turn. This path is loose, so place your feet carefully and bear in mind it may be slippery.

1.00km – As a section of paved path finished, two muddy paths will fork. BEAR RIGHT, ignoring the left path which heads towards a house. After 100 metres BEAR RIGHT as the path forks again, to head downhill with a section of wire fence on your right.

1.30km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, ignoring a mud track heading downhill on your right. This section of the walk is overgrown and can therefore be tricky to navigate. Look for dots of red paint on the rocks to guide you, and check the map regularly.

1.70km – Enjoy a nice view to the natural harbour of Marine di Praia on your right. You can also see an ancient stone tower built onto one of the coast’s jagged protrusions, used to defend against Saracen attack.

2.70km – The path will join a road and then reach a church. This is the point at which you turn around and return the same way to Praiano. If you continue along the road for 150 metres from the church you will find a café, where you can buy food and drinks, though at the time of writing this was only open until 2pm.

3.90km – Remember to CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, ignoring the muddy path on your left, then after 800 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON ignoring the steps up to the road.

5.30km – Shortly after passing the glistening dome and belltower of the church, TURN LEFT down the steps to finish in San Luca Piazza.

Anreise mit der Bahn, dem Auto, zu Fuß oder mit dem Rad

Sturdy hiking boots and a waterproof/wind-break layer are required. Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

Make sure you bring enough water. It is recommended to drink 0.75 litres per 1 hour of hiking.
