Wegbeschreibung

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we have provided these route notes to help you. The South West Coast Path is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

The first part of today’s walk does vary depending on the tide times at the Gannel River and which option you choose to cross.

The official crossing is via the Fern Pit Ferry which operates from late May to mid-September (for more information - https://fernpit.co.uk/). The second option is to cross the Penpol Footbridge. This footbridge is tidal but you should be able to cross two to four hours either side of low tide. If you are in doubt, it is very easy to continue walking from here to the next bridge further up the Gannel. The third option is the Laurie Bridge which is also a bridleway. The only time it is not possible to cross this bridge is one hour on either side of a high spring tide. The final option is to follow the main road right around the Gannel. However, this is a long and boring walk.

Once crossing the river, the last 8-miles of today’s walk provides classic cliff-top walking with some sharp ups and downs soon after leaving Crantook including a descent to the secluded beach at Porth Joke, accessed only by foot.

Kelsey Head with its huge expanse of grass is a place to linger and savor so don’t charge ahead. Next comes Hollywell with two pubs and a large holiday park after which the coast path skirts by Penhale Camp (MoD property that is heavily fenced off).

Once behind this, a narrow, heart-stopping path brings you to the start of Perran Beach, a two-mile-long stretch of golden sand bordered by dunes, the walk along the tide making a welcome change.

The approach to Perranporth is exciting, the town coming into sight only as you round the rocky outcrop of Cotty’s Point. At high tide, it is necessary to leave the beach at the lifeguard station and continue the last leg to Perranporth through the dunes.

*** This is the end of our Newquay to Perranporth route. Please use your included documentation to find your overnight accommodation. For those doing one of our shorter/longer walking itineraries you may be walking onward to overnight in Portreath - Please move onto the next route in the Macs App which is Perranporth to Portreath ***

Ausrüstung

Sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing items, and a waterproof/wind-break layer may all be required. The weather in the south is usually better than the rest of the UK and temperatures can sore, especially in the summer months. Make sure to check the weather before you go to see if you need suncream or a waterproof layer, as the weather can change quickly.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it could be beneficial to bring a power bank.

Take plenty of water for the day's walk - especially if a high temperature in the summer.
