Enjoy spectacular views south over Loch Lomond, and north towards the mountains of the Highlands, as you make your way to Crianlarich.  The West Highland Way then passes through forest, by the ruined priory of St Fillan, and across moorland to the busy little village of Tyndrum.

The trail climbs out of Inverarnan beside the River Falloch towards Crianlarich. Mighty Ben More and Stob Binnean provide a fantastic backdrop to your walk, and the views back down towards Loch Lomond are first class. After Crianlarich you enjoy a period of secluded woodland walking before making your way back to the valley floor and through farmland surrounded by towering highland scenery.

Autorentipp

There is a small shop in Crianlarich, but it's worth taking a packed lunch with you today.

Sicherheitshinweise

After heavy rains there can be landslides along the section from Inverarnan to Crianlarich blocking the path. If there have been heavy rains please check for any updates regarding the path with your accommodation before departing.

As you arrive into Tyndrum, be careful crossing the main road. Tyndrum is a popular stop for drivers and can be a busy place.

Re-stock on cash and supplies

Tyndrum is a fairly busy little hub with lots of walkers and drivers stopping on their journey through the west of Scotland. You can stock up on snacks and supplies at Brodies or the Green Welly (where there is also a cafe). If you need to withdraw some money, there is a cash machine at the Green Welly although beware it charges for use. There is also an outdoor equipment shop at the Green Welly if you need any midge repellent or additional clothing.

Tyndrum will be your last chance to stock up on cash and supplies until Kinlochleven.

Wegbeschreibung

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we provide these route notes to help you. The West Highland Way is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

Rejoin the trail at Beinglas, from the restaurant turn left at the junction to begin following the thistle way-markers north along River Falloch.  The West Highland Way route doesn’t pass by the Falls of Falloch, but around at 1.50 km you should get spectacular views of this 30 ft high waterfall.  Here the trail makes use of a restored military road as you cross the railway and A82 to trace the lower slopes of Kirk Craig passing the village of Crianlarich down on your right-hand side. Crianlarich (a 2 km return detour from the trail) has a couple of pubs, the Crianlarich Hotel, public toilets and an ATM.  The viewpoint from the slopes of Kirk Craig hill is a lovely spot to stop for a picnic!

From here the Way crosses the valley floor to pass by the St Fillan’s Priory at 14 km, some ruined walls are all that remain of this 12th century monastery that King Robert the Bruce had rebuilt as a priory to honour St Fillan after the Battle of Bannockburn.  From the priory the trail keeps to the valley floor and continues towards the village of Tyndrum – look out for signs of the old mine at Connonish just before the path comes to Tyndrum with the railway on your left-hand side.

To enter the village, turn right off the West Highland Way at 18.60 km, where the path crosses a road leading to the railway station of Tyndrum Lower on your left.  Follow this single-track road into the village – looking out for your accommodation on the way, there are a few B&Bs on your left-hand side before reaching the A82.  On reaching the A82 as it passes through the village of Tyndrum turn left for the public toilets, the Real Food Café, TJ’s Diner, and the Green Welly Stop.

***N.B.  For those staying in Ewich House you will be coming off the West Highland Way slightly earlier than other Tyndrum accommodations. Please see the directions on your accommodation list ***

In Tyndrum when you reach the A82 once again be aware that some accommodations may be on the right-hand side further down the road. Please use your specific accommodation details to direct you to the front door of each applicable property.

Ausrüstung

Sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required. The weather can change quickly so be sure to take all equipment even if the weather looks okay. A waterproof cover for your rucksack is also useful.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it would be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This scenery on this part of the route changes often and all sections are all beautiful! Be careful with comfort breaks in the tall grasses - I picked up a tick on this section. (Another day with another tick ended my Mother Nature comfort breaks!) Our feet were pretty tired by the time we reached Tyndrum Lodges so we opted for the closest restaurant - the MGM something. Big mistake - the service was awful - walk a little farther and go to the cafe or pub. Also, again, Macs mileages were off - we calculated 13.5 miles for this part of the route.

Most scenic, diverse and enjoyable stage. Take your time to enjoy the scenery. Stop at the wigwams.
