After Crianlarich enjoy a period of secluded woodland walking before making your way back to the valley floor and through farmland surrounded by towering highland scenery.  The scenery is stunning, and now that you are getting into your stride you will love the fast-going on military roads. After leaving Tyndrum follow the valley to Bridge of Orchy with the magnificent Beinn Dorain ahead of you and the railway on your right.

Keep an eye out for the train passing on the West Highland Line, which is near the trail at times.

As you arrive into Tyndrum, be careful crossing the main road. Tyndrum is a popular stop for drivers (including motor cyclists and lorries) and can be a busy place.

From Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy you will walk along old military roads and alongside The West Highland Railway Line. Walking on the military road in this section can be tough on your knees and feet so take your time and enjoy your magnificent surroundings. There is little shelter for this section make sure you are prepared for all weathers. Carry a waterproof and some sun cream.

Re-stock on cash and supplies: Tyndrum is a fairly busy little hub with lots of walkers and drivers stopping on their journey north/south. You can stock up on snacks and supplies at Brodies or the Green Welly shop. There is also a cash machine at Green Welly, although they do charge per use. There is also an outdoor equipment section in Green Welly if you need to stock-up on midge repellent.

If walking the West Highland Way Tyndrum will be your last chance to stock up on cash and supplies before reaching Kinlochleven.

***To help you follow the route with confidence we provide these route notes to help you. The West Highland Way is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

Re-join the path from where you left the previous day and follow the route uphill through the conifer plantation following the West Highland Way waymarking (do not go back through the swing gate you came through the previous day).

From here the Way crosses the valley floor to pass by the St Fillan’s Priory at 4.70 km, some ruined walls are all that remain of this 12th century monastery that King Robert the Bruce had rebuilt as a priory to honour St Fillan after the Battle of Bannockburn.  From the priory the trail keeps to the valley floor and continues towards the village of Tyndrum – look out for signs of the old mine at Connonish just before the path comes to Tyndrum with the railway on your left-hand side.

To enter the village, turn right off the West Highland Way at 9.10 km, where the path crosses a road leading to the railway station of Tyndrum Lower on your left.  Follow this single-track road into the village. On reaching the A82 as it passes through the village of Tyndrum turn left for the public toilets, the Real Food Café, TJ’s Diner, and the Green Welly Stop.

Rejoin the trail at the junction near Tyndrum Lower train station and follow the West Highland Way thistle signposts north to pass the northern end of Tyndrum.  Alternatively, follow the A82 through Tyndrum and at 600 m turn right off the road after passing the Green Welly Stop to pick up the trail here.

Continue to follow the thistle way-markers north on good paths and tracks towards the hamlet of Bridge of Orchy, on your right-hand side you’ll pass Ben Odhar (a Corbett at 901m) and conical Beinn Dorain (a Munro at 1076m). The trail bears left, crosses the railway and arrives at the Bridge of Orchy Hotel.

Sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required. The weather can change quickly so be sure to take all equipment even if the weather looks okay. A waterproof cover for your rucksack is also useful.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it would be beneficial to bring a power bank.
