This is the longest walk of the Dingle Way, and is somewhat of a reward after a strenuous previous section. Enjoy walking along Ireland's longest beach for a large part of your journey into Castlegregory.
Impressive glacial valley views stretch ahead as you stride out of Cloghane. Although the longest stage, you can look forward to extended flat beach walking along the shores of Brandon and Tralee Bays, an absolute joy! The Dingle Way spans the length of Ireland’s longest beach, Fermoyle Strand, a seemingly endless string of thundering waves crashing onto a fantastic 11km of golden sand and dunes.
Reaching the head of the strand, the trail curves around Scraggane Bay to the north before returning down the eastern side of the loop and along the road to Castlegregory.

A large portion of the Dingle Way is on minor, low-traffic roads. Where there is no pavement, you should walk on the right side facing the oncoming traffic, except where the road bends right when you should cross over to the other side. Stay alert to vehicles around you and be prepared to step into the verge if necessary.
The trail is often rocky and uneven and can be slippery when wet. Wear appropriate footwear and take care with your foot placements, particularly at the end of the day when you may be tired. Walking poles can be useful on some of the steep ascents and descents.
The weather can change quickly. Be sure to pack appropriate clothing in your day-bag.
Today's route involves a lot of beach walking. The sands should be safe to walk on, but if you are not sure, take the dunes or wait for a safe passage.

Magharee Islands
The Magharee Islands or better known locally as "The Seven Hogs", are a group of uninhabited islands located off Rough Point. You will enjoy the extraordinary shape of the tombolo when walking the beach towards Kilshannig. The largest of the Magharee islands has remains of a monastic settlement thought to have been founded by St. Senan and the site is thought to be 7th century AD in date.
Food and Drink
There is a pub called Spillane's Bar in Fahamore at the end of Fahamore Strand. Please bear in mind that it may be closed when you visit so it is advised to always bring enough snacks and water for the duration of your journey. Check www.spillanesbar.com for more information about opening hours. Your accommodation may be able to arrange a packed lunch for you.
Castlegregory, where you will finish your walk, has shops, bars and restaurants.

Head south through the village of Cloghane into the countryside crossing a river and following a quiet road.
After roughly 3 km walk STRAIGHT ON crossing Scorid and Glennahoo Rivers and TURN LEFT at a T-junction as you continue towards Fermoyle Strand. This is Ireland's longest beach, which you will follow for 11km (7 mi) until you reach Fahamore.
Just before the end of the beach TURN RIGHT through a gap in the dunes following a waymarker. When the grassy path meets a road TURN LEFT for Fahamore.
TURN RIGHT at Spillane's Bar following a trail which eventually runs through a field and brings you to the edge of Scraggane Bay. Take care when dropping down and TURN RIGHT to follow the edges. At high tide, it is safest to follow the road parallel to the shore, otherwise, you can continue on the sands for roughly 1 km.
Leave the beach at Kilshannig and TURN RIGHT for 30m, then BEAR LEFT along a track opposite a white cottage. (Please note: If you have been walking along the road instead of the beach because of high tide, turn right at the small white cottage). Continue STRAIGHT ON following the route to the next beach which stretches southward for 2km.
Walk up a small ramp to leave the beach just before its end and continue STRAIGHT ON across a grassy track. Cross a bridge across the Trench and TURN LEFT as signposted to return to the beach until you reach Castlegregory.

Bring appropriate footwear, preferably walking boots with good grip and ankle support.
Bring waterproof jacket and trousers, even where the weather forecast makes this appear unnecessary.
Walking poles may be useful on some of the steep ascents and descents.
Food for the duration of the hike two litres of water is recommended.
A powerbank and phone cable may be useful if you are navigating using your phone. Phone batteries are less effective in cold weather.
