Head out of Cetinje and on to an old trader’s route which will lead you through the mountains and valleys of Lovcen, to your next base in Ivanova Konak, in the heart of the national park.

Your rustic mountain hotel is a lovely place to spend the next couple of nights with its location in a beautiful valley covered with forests and meadows. Enjoy the fantastic views and sample some delicious Montenegrin food and wine.

Autorentipp

This is a long day, get an early start so you can amble through the meadows. The forest section is also quite bad for biting insects, be sure to bring repellant and a long sleeve top today.

Sicherheitshinweise

There are some road crossings, always be aware of traffic and be sure to use a pavement/sidewalk where possible. Where it isn’t, walk on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of oncoming traffic.

Some of the ground can be uneven, with rocky/pebbly paths. Ensure you have suitable footwear and step cautiously when needed.

Parts of the route follow clifftops, so take care to walk a reasonable distance from the edge - particularly in low visibility.

Although most of the snakes are not poisonous, and many of them are very timid, you will see them. Take care by stopping moving when you see them and keeping a safe distance as it leaves the path to allow you to cross.

There can be quick but fierce thunderstorms, make sure you check the weather before you go out and make sure you know the correct behaviour if you are caught in a storm: https://www.cdc.gov/features/lightning-safety/index.html

Points of Interest

Cetinje

Cetinje is a city and Old Royal Capital of Montenegro. It is also the historic and the secondary capital of Montenegro, where the official residence of the President of Montenegro is located. It has the old embassy buildings for the USA, U.K, France and Russia (among others) and is a beautiful little town to stroll around, with large parts car-free.

Lovcen National Park

The world of flora and fauna play a vital role in National Park Lovcen with nine different habitats in a very small space. The diversity of flora, in particular, is astounding. There are 2000 different species of plant in the Park. This abundance of life is the result of extreme altitudes and the competing influence of two climate zones: Mediterranean and Continental.

The hidden mountain meadow

At 4 kilometres, you emerge from the steep climb through the thick forest into a mountain basin, a large green expanse of grass and flowers surrounded by rock. It seems it is almost an emerald lake and makes for a magical place to stop for lunch.

Wegbeschreibung

0.00 km - Start with your back to the Central Library main gate and TURN RIGHT down the long flat road

1.40 km - At the hairpin  BEAR RIGHT off the road on to a small ascending stone path marked with a red and white circle

1.60 km - Rejoin the road, TURN RIGHT ascending

2.00 km - TURN RIGHT off the main road, on to a smaller road that descends

3.30 km - TURN LEFT off the road onto a small path that ascends through the woods, marked by a red and white way marker and a lamp post

4.00 km - Come out of the woods as you crest the hill, BEAR RIGHT onto a small path that skirts the small valley

4.20 km - Continue to follow the path and then BEAR RIGHT sharply to join a stone path that ascends out of the woods

4.30 km - The path turns into vehicle track, BEAR RIGHT and follow the track up through the woods

5.20 km - The path reaches a road TURN RIGHT to follow the road as it ascends. Alternatively, you can follow the path that runs intermittently adjacent to the road, there are horses that have access to this path so consider that when you choose your route option

7.70 km - TURN LEFT off the road onto a faint stone path, this path cuts the corner off the road and provides a more scenic option, however it is not a clear path and the ground can be uneven. Proceed across the stony ground by choosing to BEAR RIGHT for the first 100 metres then begin to BEAR LEFT and pass the ski lift to rejoin the road where you TURN LEFT

9.10 km - You arrive at Lovcen National Park, your day of walking is finished

Ausrüstung

The ground can be uneven, so be sure to wear sturdy walking boots with suitable ankle support.

We enjoyed this hike. There are several great views. There is one steep area but it was well shaded. We followed the App as many sections were not well marked. As others have noted there were several sections that were road hiking. Not too much traffic in Sept 2021 but still road hiking. Our phones both clocked the trail as closer to 7 miles. With stops it took us 4.5 hours

If you follow the map this hike is partly on marked trails and partly on roads. An heard of goats followed us for a few km, what a wonderful surprise!

The majority of this walk was on or alongside roads. The off-road trails were fairly uninspiring and at times poorly marked. It was also a short walk and it felt like a bit of a wasted day.
