Bernina Bahn and Circular Walk to Alp Grum
This is a high alpine pass commencing on a glacial lake shore with a relaxed climb up to a prominent outcrop, then descending to the alpine railway station. The footing is gravel track leading to well-marked paths which become stony and zig zag frequently.
Take a short ride on the UNESCO listed Bernina Bahn, a train line which equals the Glacier Express for stunning views. Getting off at Bernina Hospiz station, follow the easy circular walking route skirting Lago Bianco to Alp Grum and hike up to the mountain hut at Sassat Mason. The peace and tranquillity of this area is inspiring. Return to Pontresina by train. Ospizio Bernina/Bernina Hospiz Station Is a stop on request only station, listen for the announcements, one of which will be in English.

The Sassal Mason hut is well placed for a lunch break (Closed for Summer 2021). They offer warm and cold food including local specialities. On a clear day the views from here of the surrounding lakes is fantastic. Always check opening hours and carry food/snacks in case of unplanned closures.

Pick up a packed lunch in Pontresina to take with you. Food is served at Sassal Mason Hut but we recommend taking a packed lunch in case of unplanned closure.

The Bernina Pass traces its human connections back to the Bronze Age and archaeological discoveries in Val Engadin link the region to Italy’s Valtellina Valley.
Piz Bernina
Piz Bernina, 4049m and ranked 5th in the Alps, forms part of the watershed between Switzerland and Italy. The mountain separates two glaciers, Vadret de Tschierva to the West and Vadret de Morteratsch to the East.
Lago da Bianco
Lago da Bianco, the “White Lake”, was formed when the two natural lakes, Lago Bianco and Lago della Scalla were both dammed. The associated hydroelectric system has powered the railway from its inception.

The Bernina Line was first established 100 years ago and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008.

0.00 km - Start from Suravos Station and catch the Rhaetische Bahn towards Tirano and disembark at Ospizio Bernina. Once you have disembarked from the train at Ospizio, continue along the platform in the direction of the train. At the left fork go up hill on the gravel path and follow the yellow sign post to “Alp Grum” and green routes 30 and 33. Follow this path beside the lake and the railway until the yellow sign by the dam.
2.40 km - TURN RIGHT and follow further yellow signs to 'Sassal Mason' and climb up the wide stony path to the hut. Enjoy a break here and take in the views of the valley and the glacier.
3.80 km - Once you are ready to move on, TURN RIGHT to exit the terrace on the gravel path in the direction of the glacier. Begin to descend on zig zagging stony path and continue to follow yellow signs for 'Alp Grum'.
5.80 km -BEAR RIGHT, continue downhill following the yellow sign for 'Alp Grum'. Come to the railway line and cross with caution. NOTE : The path continues above and beyond the station before descending onto the platform.
6.30 km - Finish: You have now arrived at 'Alp Grum' Station. Take the train back to Suravos station and then walk back to your Pontresina hotel.
