It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what has changed since yesterday, but today’s hike feels a little different from previous days. Perhaps it is because the cliffs are a little higher and steeper. Or maybe it’s because the dunes are wider and roll a little further. A combination of these factors, among others, gives you fresh eyes with which to admire today’s beautiful scenery.

The coastal views climax as you walk out onto the exposed cape of Cabo Sardão and let the Atlantic Ocean envelope you. When the weather’s nice, a huge sky balloons above you and it feels like you’re standing upon a blue orb with a flat sea stretching to the horizon. Yachts glide past on the wind’s breath and birds playfully skip between the cliffs.  When the weather’s bad however, foaming waves tear at the foot of the cliffs and gusts of wind scour the earth and sea. Only the stalwart lighthouse remains still, warding ships away.

You will be staying in either Herdade do Touril or Zambujeira do Mar tonight. There are 5 kilometres apart, so be sure to check your accommodation notes before arrival so you can follow the route notes and map to the correct accommodation!

Bring food and drink with you to enjoy a picnic at Cabo Sardão, with views stretching up and down the coast!

There are many exposed and unfenced edges throughout the walk. Additionally, some of the cliff-edges may be unstable; be careful and remain on the path.

There are several stretches where you must walk on the road as there is no pavement. Walk on the left side facing the oncoming traffic unless there is a sharp left bend, in which case you should cross to the outside edge to allow drivers the maximum time to see you.

Some of the path is along rocky steps; be careful as these may be slippery, especially when wet.

Points of Interest

Cabo Sardão + Lighthouse

Cabo Sardão is the most prominent point along a nearly 100km stretch of coastline between Cape Sines and Cape St. Vincent. From here you can enjoy far-reaching views along the coast, to the cliffs that plunge vertically into the sea, and the daring storks that nest atop them. The Lighthouse at Cape Sardão became operational in 1915.

Lapa de Pombas Harbour

The natural alignment of the rocks and cliffs provides this cove with excellent shelter from the Ocean’s wrath, and also with a narrow channel to guide boats in and out through. Local fishermen know this channel instinctively and have a name for each rock.

White Storks’ Nests

This stretch of Portugal’s Coast is famous for its white storks - or rather, the crazy positioning of their nests. These large nests cling precipitously to the cliffs, sometimes with a hundred-metre drop to the tumultuous ocean on all sides. Not a great location for a newborn stork to take its first flight! If you are visiting in spring (April/May) you are in luck as the nests may have chicks in, whereas towards the end of summer they migrate south to Africa.

Entrada da Barca

Entrada da Barca refers to both the small, natural harbour which overflows with fishing paraphernalia, and the collection of wooden huts where some of the hardcore fishermen live. The port is gritty and photogenic and displays Portuguese fishing at its realest. There are two restaurants nearby where you can sample seafood as fresh at it gets(!), or you may even be lucky to see the fishermen selling their catch in a fish auction directly at the harbour.

Food and Drink

You will pass a café after 10.5 kilometres in the village of Cavaleiro, and two restaurants near the Entrada da Barca Harbour after 19.5 kilometres. There are few opportunities to buy food or drink so be sure to bring sufficient provisions with you.

Herdade do Touril Rural Turismo or Zambujeira do Mar

These route notes begin from Longueira, but if you stayed in Almograve you can skip straight to 1.9 kilometres.

0.00km – Start with your back to the Monte Novo da Longueira Rural Turismo. CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along Rua de Monte Novo. After 40 metres, TURN LEFT to pass the grassy triangle with outdoor sports equipment on your right.

0.13km – TURN LEFT at the ‘Stop’ junction. Then at the T-junction after 100 metres, TURN RIGHT. Remain on this road for 1.8 kilometres to return to Almograve

0.00km – Start at the roundabout in the centre of Almograve and continue towards the coast , shortly joining the wooden boardwalk section.

0.70km – As the wooden boardwalk crosses the paved road at a zebra crossing (black and white markings) and beside a car park, TURN LEFT to walk along the road parallel to the sea on your right. Remain on this road for 1.9 kilometres.

2.60km – As the gravel road suddenly becomes cobbled and reaches a car park, TURN LEFT onto the sandy path, following the green and blue markings. This path will pass above the natural harbour of Lapa de Pombas.

4.80km – BEAR LEFT to head away from the coast, following the sign for Cabo Sardão and Zambujeira do Mar. As the path forks in the pine forest after 300 metres, BEAR RIGHT to follow the blue and green markings.

5.60km – As the environment changes from a sparse pine forest to a luscious deciduous woodland, TURN RIGHT as the path splits. There are three green and blue crosses on the trees ahead to stop you taking this path.

5.80km – BEAR RIGHT as the path forks, then after 50 metres, BEAR LEFT. There are regular green and blue markings to guide you, though check the map regularly during this section to ensure you remain on the correct path.

6.30km – As you re-enter an area of rolling sand dunes and the path forks, BEAR LEFT. This path will continue along the coast.

7.60km – Upon reaching a car park, TURN LEFT to walk along the gravel road, following the sign to Cavaleiro.

8.70km – As you reach a ‘stop’ junction, BEAR RIGHT to pass the café on your right, following the blue arrow on the telegraph pole. Ignore the sharp right turn that continues along the main paved road. After 100 metres, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON passing a shelter, picnic bench and information board on your left, following the sign to Zambujeira do Mar.

8.90km – TURN LEFT at the T-junction.

9.20km – At a crossroads with gravel roads on either side and the lighthouse directly ahead, and beside a small post-box (where locals collect their post), TURN RIGHT onto the sandy vehicle tracks, following the sign for Zambujeira do Mar.

10.40km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, passing to the right of the lighthouse and then the football pitch. You can take a detour on one of the paths on your right to enjoy spectacular viewpoints, though be careful of exposed cliff edges. After 200 metres, once past the football pitch, TURN RIGHT onto the sandy road, following the sign for Percurso S.

12.70km – BEAR LEFT as the sandy road forks beside a wire fence and car parking area, to keep walking with the wire fence on your left.

13.30km – As the wire fence bends 90° left, and beside faded information boards, TURN RIGHT along the sandy road.

13.40km – The road forks. If you are staying in Herdade do Touril, BEAR LEFT to walk along the gravel road and follow the signs for Herdade do Touril. After 1 kilometre, TURN LEFT through a wooden gate and follow the footpath to Recepcão. In the morning return along the same gravel road to the trail, and follow signs to Zambujeira do Mar.

If your accommodation is booked for Zambujeira do Mar, BEAR RIGHT between the upright wooden posts to continue along the clifftops, following the sign for Zambujeira do Mar.

17.10km – BEAR RIGHT from the sandy road and onto the footpath that winds through bushes, passing a sign warning about unstable cliffs. This path descends to the harbour on wooden steps.

17.30km - From the harbour, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to head uphill on the paved road.

17.60km – With a restaurant on your left and picnic benches on your right, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, following the sign to Zambujeira do Mar. Walk on the footpath beside this paved road for 2.2 kilometres.

19.80km - Shortly after passing over a section of wooden boardwalk and with the sign to Zambujeira do Mar directly ahead, TURN RIGHT to pass a picnic bench and gym equipment and walk along the wooden boardwalk, following the signpost with binoculars on. This path continues atop the cliffs.

20.50km – Upon reaching the wooden board walk, TURN LEFT to walk towards Zambujeira do Mar. After 200 metres, as you reach the paved road, TURN RIGHT along Rua da Fonte.

20.90km – At the roundabout, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross over the road and finish beside the small church, appropriately named ‘Our Lady of the Sea’. Why not sit here for a moment, enjoying the fantastic views?
