Cold Ashton
So named because of the cold winds that can sweep up from the Bristol Chanel to its exposed face. Medieval farmers cultivated vines on its south-facing slopes.
The gabled Elizabethan manor with its tall chimneys and ornate gateway is considered one of the finest examples of its type in the country. It was here that Sir Bevil Grenville died in 1643 following the nearby Battle of Lansdown in the Civil War.
